Trust

I have to admit, I’m a bit of a control freak. I’m not fond of surprises. When I plan a workshop, I work out a detailed script.

And, of course, the workshop always goes entirely differently than planned. The dynamics of the group ask for another approach or unexpected interventions occur. I have learned to then let go of everything I’d planned and to trust that things will go well.

In my series of 5 articles on the 5 Rhythms, we started our journey of exploration out of curiosity in the Flowing rhythm. Then we reached the courage to be clear in Staccato. Now we have arrived in unpredictable Chaos. Life always goes differently than planned. And there is only one answer to that: let go of the control and trust that things happen the way they should happen.

Children trust life. They are innocent and trust that the world is a safe and friendly place. Later this innocent trust disappears, as life turns up disappointments and hurt.

How can you regain this belief that the world is a safe and friendly place? Part of the answer lies in surrender. Don’t try to fight what is happening. Accept what is. Do you feel pain, sorrow or fear? Accept it. By accepting it instead of fighting it, it will become bearable. And, strangely enough, this is the fastest road back to trust.

Sometimes life feels like a rushing river. Try to relax and swim with the stream, trusting life.

How do you deal with the unexpected?
