Listening carefully

One of my favorite David Whyte poems begins like this:

“Sometimes
if you move carefully
through the forest

breathing
like the ones
in the old stories

who could cross
a shimmering bed of leaves
without a sound, […]”

I find this quality of being quietly present in the world very challenging. Even when I’m alone, I tend to be caught up in projects, inner chatter, doing things… anything but silence.

And so I practice sitting silently for at least a half hour daily, listening attentively to those very quiet voices deep inside me that otherwise would not be heard.

When, a few weeks ago, I got so caught up actively “doing” in the world that I started skipping this practice, I was gifted with a dream:

I’m walking through a sand-dune landscape. I stop to rest and hear very faint rustling. When I look carefully, I see two translucent puffball shapes, very similar to dandelion puffs but larger. As I gaze at them, I see beaks and eyes starting to emerge. I realize that this is the (dream) way that baby swans emerge into the world. But when I make a movement, I startle the swans and they disappear into thin air. I study the ground carefully and see traces of down forming a faint trail. I walk softly, following the trail to a hollow space in a rock cliff. A bush is growing in the hollow with similar downy shapes on it. I realize that the 'baby swans' have found this place to hide and feel relieved that they are safe.

The dream was reminding me to sit quietly again, to listen to what is almost inaudible and see what is almost invisible.

David Whyte’s poem continues:
“you come
to a place
who’s only task

is to trouble you
with tiny
but frightening requests

conceived out of nowhere
but in this place
beginning to lead everywhere. […]

When we do sit quietly and listen carefully, we hear things that can shape our lives and lead us to where we really need to go. Which is not necessarily where we’re heading right now. It is a challenge and a blessing.

Courage

I feel so lucky! I was recently able to attend a full-day workshop in Amsterdam held by the poet David Whyte. And, those of you who have been following this blog know that he is my very favorite poet (and author in general).

The title of the talk was Robust Vulnerability. But the theme that stuck with me the most afterwards was that of courageous conversations. The kind of conversation you have with your loved ones, where you bare your soul, not knowing how the other will react, maybe going out on a limb, but determined to carry on the conversation anyway.

And I thought back on all those times that I avoided having that courageous conversation, trying to stay safe in the world as I understood it at the time.

Or the conversation that you have with yourself, admitting something that is almost too big to contain. Going out to the edge of what you understand about yourself and knowing that you can’t hide from yourself any more. Maybe admitting longing, defeat, or heartbreak. Maybe it’s about a step that you know you must take… even though you don’t know what will happen when you do.

And I challenged myself to hold that courageous conversation with myself and, through my writing, with the world.

Whyte used the term moulting. When birds moult (exchanging one coat of feathers for a new one) they shed everything that makes them attractive, trusting that the new coat will come. Some of them do this feather for feather but others do it all at once. And facing the world with a naked skin makes one very vulnerable.

We humans often try to keep ourselves covered with a coating that makes us as attractive as possible to others. Shedding that skin makes us feel way too vulnerable. The night after the talk, I dreamt that I had lost all my curly hair and had bald patches all over my head. Fortunately, my subconscious was not telling me to shave my head but it was telling me to pay attention to this concept of shedding all the masks that make me look as attractive as possible. To myself and to the outside world.

And this, I think, is courage. If we can show this kind of courage in our lives and our relationships, we emerge stronger and more beautiful than before.

Desire

“Desire and longing shapes the identity as it moves along, refusing to choose between what is looked for on the outside and what might be found on the inside.” David Whyte

I found this quote in a mini-essay on the difference between Ambition and Desire. It fit totally to the situation that I described in my last blog. The project that I was committed to was changing, taking on a different shape than the shape of my ambitions. When we met as a team, to discuss the situation, we realized that it still answered to each of our deepest longings – to share our work and find synergy in working together. And so we let the original ambition go and just went with the desire, exploring what shows up. And the adventure that we have embarked on now is far more alluring and exciting than the original ambition.

The word desire popped up in another conversation, when a friend commented that giving in to desire was something to be controlled. Like a wildfire that needs to be tamed. And, even though I was aware that he used the word differently, I do wonder if this type of desire isn’t also a signal that should be taken seriously. There is always a reason to desire something or someone. And the reason just may be important.

For instance, you have a very strong desire to eat chocolate ice cream. And you also feel you need to watch your waistline. Is it possible that this craving is a way of covering up the real issue, that you are feeling unhappy about yourself? Suddenly the real issue is finding out how to be happier with yourself instead of doing your best not to give in to that craving for ice cream.

It is possible that giving in to some forms of desire could lead a person down a destructive path. My sense is that this is only true if that person is already bound to that path. Someone with an intense desire to hurt people is a dangerous person. Putting the lid on that desire will only work temporarily. And when the lid does pop off, the desire may have gone demonic. We have seen tragic instances of that in recent years.

True, deep desire in a healthy psyche is like a lighthouse, beckoning and warning us for things we must see in order to grow and develop. Trying to control desire would be just as unwise as extinguishing the beacon of that lighthouse.

How do you listen to your deepest desire?

Verlangen

“Desire and longing shapes the identity as it moves along, refusing to choose between what is looked for on the outside and what might be found on the inside.” David Whyte

Resolve

A good friend is having trouble keeping the promises he makes to himself these days. He wants to be a good person, a person he can be proud of. A man of his word. But something keeps getting in the way and he has trouble forgiving himself.

My mother used to call it lack of willpower, lack of self-discipline. My Inner Critic still sometimes tells me that I have no willpower (and his voice then sounds suspiciously like my mother’s).

I think that one of the secrets to keeping our promises to ourselves is to realize that, as long as the voice of the Inner Critic is getting in the way, we can't hear the little voice inside that is trying to tell us what we really need. So give your Inner Critic a big hug, thank him for looking out for your welfare, and then stop listening to him for a bit. Start listening to that inner voice.

Keeping these promises to ourselves requires courage. Courage, more than discipline, invokes the fire at our core. That is the reason we can only keep the really important promises. Those are the themes in our lives that we are truly passionate about.

So sometimes, meeting up to our expectations has a lot to do with understanding exactly why these are our expectations. Understanding why this one little thing is so enormously important to you and at the same time so difficult. Why will you only feel good about yourself if you can do this? What is life-defining about it? What is the little voice inside you really whispering? Can you stop your inner dialogue long enough to hear?

David Whyte speaks of this:

By the lake in the wood,
in the shadows,
you can
whisper that truth
to the quiet reflection
you see in the water.
Whatever you hear from
the water, remember,
it wants you to carry
the sound of its truth on your lips
(…)
and out of the silence
you can make a new promise
it will kill you to break,

Voornemens

David Whyte schrijft hierover:

By the lake in the wood,
in the shadows,
you can
whisper that truth
to the quiet reflection
you see in the water.
Whatever you hear from
the water, remember,
it wants you to carry
the sound of its truth on your lips
(…)
and out of the silence
you can make a new promise
it will kill you to break,

Memories

Recently I got back in touch with someone whom I hadn’t seen in more than 40 years. Facebook is sometimes pretty fantastic! Our renewed contact brought back my younger years: the romance, passion, poetry, and beauty that was part of my life then.

While I was reliving all of this again, I realized that this is more than just nostalgia about the past. The meeting and the emotions it brought up remind me that these themes are still very important to me. This was a real wake-up call, a call to bring these themes back into my life.

A call to re-live something is something very different from a flight into the past. My favorite poet, David Whyte, has this to say about it:

Nostalgia tells us we are in the presence of imminent revelation, about to break through our present structures held together by memories not yet fully understood; something understood but not fully understood, issuing not from our future but from something already experienced, something already lived but not fully lived, something that was important, but something to which we did not grant importance enough, something now wanting to be lived again, at the depth to which it first invited us but which we originally refused.

I treasure my renewed contact with my old friend. But what is more important, I treasure the return of romance, passion, poetry, and beauty in my life.

Have you recently been awakened by a voice from the past? Please share with us!

Herinneringen

Nostalgia tells us we are in the presence of imminent revelation, about to break through our present structures held together by memories not yet fully understood; something understood but not fully understood, issuing not from our future but from something already experienced, something already lived but not fully lived, something that was important, but something to which we did not grant importance enough, something now wanting to be lived again, at the depth to which it first invited us but which we originally refused.

Coming home

I love traveling and this spring I did a lot of it. I love soaking up new experiences and images. But, at one point, I returned home, looked around me, and thought: how wonderful to be home. I want to stay here now.

This is also true for my inner journey. I remain hungry for new insights, new wisdom, and new possibilities to live life fully. And this is a good thing. It’s a natural process, to want to grow and not stagnate. But the paradox is that the real destination of all our travels is to come home. Come home to whom we truly are. Coming home means laying aside the masks we wear and letting go all the stories we tell ourselves about who we should be.

This brings us to an even bigger paradox: We already are home. Who we are now, is exactly who we should be. This has also been the message of the great spiritual leaders through the centuries. Eckhart Tolle voices it clearly in his book The Power of Now. The secret is: we already are home, we never left.

Is this a difficult concept? Do you have trouble accepting it? This is a truth you can only know with your heart, it doesn’t work to try and reason it out. Take a look at yourself in the mirror and say to yourself, “I love you just the way you are. You are perfectly good.” Watch your own eyes as you say this, they will immediately reflect your reaction. Can you feel the truth of your words? Remind yourself, as often as you can, that life is here to be lived, one moment at a time. Just by sitting out in the garden, feeling the sun’s warmth on your face, and listening to the birdsong.

To me, the following excerpt from the poem Santiago by my favorite poet, David Whyte, says it so eloquently:

…so that one day you realized that what you wanted
had already happened long ago and in the dwelling place
in which you had lived before you began,
and that every step along the way, you had carried
the heart and the mind and the promise,
that first set you off and then drew you on, and that you were more marvelous in your simple wish to find a way
than the gilded roofs of any destination you could reach

Thuiskomen

…so that one day you realized that what you wanted
had already happened long ago and in the dwelling place
in which you had lived before you began,
and that every step along the way, you had carried
the heart and the mind and the promise,
that first set you off and then drew you on, and that you were more marvelous in your simple wish to find a way
than the gilded roofs of any destination you could reach
